the next right thing

I don’t know about you, but this quarantine has me OVERWHELMED.  While many of you reading this may be working from home right now, artists all over the country are suddenly unemployed.

In the midst of this disappearance of jobs has come an abundance of artistic offerings.  HOW INCREDIBLE that our community is coming together to give the gift of art.  Yesterday alone I took a virtual ballet barre, free cardio class, theatre history course, and listened to half of an audiobook. But today, I found myself laying under my weighted blanket feeling immense overwhelm.  In a given day I can go from feeling so connected to purpose and my hunger for knowledge and continuing education…and the next day I am stuck in the swirl of thoughts about how long this will last and when I can see my NYC tribe in-person again.

On a call yesterday, my friend Elise left me with a phrase that is going to get me through this time: “What is your next right thing?”  Your next right thing is not going to be my next right thing.  Coming back to this phrase a few times a day provides an easy check-in for us.  Some days it may be taking that online course Yale is offering.  Some days, it may be turning off all technology, laying in the grass, and connecting with your senses.  Give yourself the grace of check-ins a few times a day.  Give yourself the opportunity to discover your next right thing.

Give yourself the opportunity to discover your next right thing.
